Human Development

The Human Development and Wellness program at Waverly School is a comprehensive, whole-person approach that integrates physical, emotional, and social well-being. Rooted in the understanding that what we think, feel, and believe directly impacts our health, the program is thoughtfully designed to meet students at each developmental stage—from elementary through high school. Drawing on research-based resources, students explore topics such as identity, relationships, personal values, sexual health, and decision-making through the dual lenses of intersectionality and overall well-being. Grounded in the five core tenets of social-emotional learning—self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making—the curriculum empowers students to understand themselves better and navigate the world around them with confidence and care.

Across all divisions, the program evolves in depth and complexity. In Elementary School, students build foundational skills in identity, inclusion, communication, and understanding physical and emotional changes.

Middle School students expand this knowledge to examine peer dynamics, mental health, digital citizenship, and the influence of social pressures.

In High School, Human Development is embedded within the Social Justice Seminar, where students engage more deeply with topics such as healthy relationships, sexual decision-making, intersectional identity, and lifelong wellness practices. Throughout, the program emphasizes critical thinking, empathy, and self-reflection, equipping students with the knowledge and skills to lead healthy, responsible, and meaningful lives.
