Radio 626/Pasadena Youth Radio is a project initiated by the Pasadena Public Health Department in partnership with The Waverly High School and Pasadena Unified School District's Health Academy of the Blair International Baccalaureate School.
The purpose of the project is to give high school students the chance to develop some of the hands-on skills needed for radio production (both technical and literary), collaborating with students from other Pasadena schools that they might otherwise not get to know. Students are given the opportunity to frame and express their thoughts in fun, creative and articulate ways, and give them some of the tools needed to advocate for themselves on local issues important to them.
The idea for Radio 626 was initiated by the Pasadena Health Department's Healthy Cities Program. Radio 626 is founded on the principles and processes of National Foundation of Community Broadcasters and the National Youth in Radio Training Project, started in the late 1990's and, today, trains high school age students in radio production at over 50 sites nationwide.
There are no fees for students to participate in this project. Students sign a contract, co-signed by a parent or guardian, pledging their participation for the entire 10-12 week program. The program is taught by local high school and college faculty.
