Founded in 1892, the city of Pasadena Public Health Department's ("PPHD") mission is to ensure and promote a healthy community with healthy people and to work with others to assure opportunities for optimal health for present and future generations. PPHD promotes the meaning of "health" as broadly defined to mean both the absence of disease and the presence of well-being--physical, social, economic, mental and spiritual. PPHD provides legally-mandated services, enforces the state Health and Safety Code, and administers other policies, statutes, regulations and programs that promote quality of life, community health, and well-being.
As guardians of the public's health, PPHD provides many imperceptible activities that promote the health of individuals and the community and protect citizens from illness, injury and environmental hazards. The Department also provides highly visible public health services and clinical programs to accomplish the fundamental functions of health assessment, health assurance, and policy development. Working with a host of local and regional partners and stakeholders, the Pasadena Public Health Department champions interventions and strategies that resolve public health problems and create long term, sustainable improvements in community health. As one of only three city-based independent health jurisdictions in the state of California, the Pasadena Public Health Department offers over 30 clinics, programs and services.
