H.S. Summer School

The Waverly School will be offering summer school classes this year at the high school campus. There will be classes for middle school students and high school students. Summer school will be held June 8, 2008 - July 24, 2009 (7 weeks). Summer School will be closed on Friday, July 3, 2009, in honor of the Fourth of July holiday. Please note: Not all classes are 7 weeks in length. Classes will be held Monday through Friday, except where noted.

Completed registration form and non-refundable deposit of $100 per course are due to the Business Office no later than April 7, 2009.

Algebra I for credit

Course Description:Students in this class will perform fun science and chemistry experiments such as freezing point depression (making ice cream) and cation flame test (fire of the elements) which will help them understand how chemical principles are applied to daily life. The experiments will cover fundamental and advanced topics in the areas of chemistry, biology and physics. In addition, students will also study trends of the periodic table and learn to classify reactions according to physical and chemical changes. Furthermore, students will see the applications of chemistry in everyday life through this hands-on approach to learning science.


Creative Writing: Fantasy & Science Fiction

Course Description: If you love to read fantasy and science fiction and have lots of ideas for your own stories, this class will help you create believable characters, fantastical settings and plots that pull the reader into your world. Bring your favorite books so we can discuss what makes them so great. And bring your ideas; we will be writing in class and sharing our work with each other.

Course Description: This course will cover basic problem-solving techniques and core Algebra concepts used in Algebra1 classes. The course material will help students work on their weak areas to become successful in Algebra1. The students will also learn Algebra 1 concepts such as simplifying Algebraic expressions, graphing techniques, factoring techniques, solving equations and inequalities, simplifying polynomials and solving systems of equations.

Course Description: This course will explain how Geometry concepts can be applied to problem solving. The main focus of this course is to prepare students to become good thinkers, to understand the logic and reasoning behind Geometry. The students will learn the writing format of proofs, theorems, angle calculations, perimeter and area calculations, polygons, Trigonometry and area/volume calculations.

Course Description: This course is designed to explain information technology and computer science. The content of the course gives students an opportunity to explore the use of technology. The students will learn basic computer programming languages and computer networking techniques. The course material will help students to understand binary numbers, writing codes, routers, switches and assigning IP addresses.

Course Description: Book lovers, meet some of your 9th grade classmates and read two high-interest books at Waverly this summer. We will engage in discussion and creative interpretation of our books, while we enjoy the summer sunshine on the high school campus. We will do some in-class reading of each book, but independent daily reading will be required.


U.S. Government for credit

Dates: 7/6/09 – 7/24/09 (3 weeks)
Days & Time: Monday through Friday; 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. (with 30 minutes for lunch)
Location: High school campus, Friendship House
Cost: $600
Note: The course will critically examine: the structure and operations of the federal government; Constitutional rights; judicial review; the electoral process; the history of political parties; philosophies and policies of different ideological camps; opinion polling; and, the roles of the media. Comparisons between the US and other constitutional democracies will be made. Elitist, pluralist and egalitarian theories, and issues of social class and status will be examined. Recent and ongoing events will be used as case studies. Equivalent to a one semester course. Class will break for lunch from 12:30 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. Open to rising 10th, 11th and 12th graders.
